Today’s top current agri-affairs
“Sudden boom in tapioca price”—Kerala
Kerala’s farmer-friendly crop, in the range of around ₹40 per kg in the retail market has brought cheers to the farming community. 😍 Many farmers have cited the reasons for price rise listed below,
The farming community attributed the price rise to intermittent rains that have led to a shortage.
Or it may be due to shifting to more lucrative crops like bananas over land previously used for tapioca cultivation. This too seems to have led to a shortage in arrivals and the price increase.
And due to labor shortage, hike in wages and rise in production costs due to the increase in fertilizer inputs are a concern.
because of lower production due to declining area, attack of wild animals, especially wild boar, and non-arrival of cassava tubers from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
In Kerala, tapioca is grown on an area of 62,070 hectares producing 25.92 lakh tonnes with a productivity of 41.77 tonnes per hectare. The cost of cultivation for one hectare is estimated to be about ₹1.5-2 lakh.
“ETO impact on organic shipment from India”— European commission
Indian organic exports have been affected by the presence of Ethylene oxide (ETO), which the EU considers to be carcinogenic for humans. Therefore, it is strictly monitored to ensure that the shipment of any product conforms to the norms.
In the case of India, the presence of ETO has been found to have exceeded the permitted level, which the EU felt posed a health risk to its consumers.
In a notification last week, the EC proposed an amendment to implementing regulation with regard to recognition of control authorities and control bodies (certifying agencies) for permitting the import of organic products into the Union.
The EU had suspended five firms (ECOCERT India Pvt Ltd, CU Inspections Ltd, Indian Organic Certification Agency (Indocert), Lacon Quality Certifications Pvt Ltd, and OneCert International Private Ltd) as it feels they are not functioning properly in India.
“29 members MSP panel team”—The center
As promised by PM Narendra Modi during the repeal of farm laws to form a panel on deciding MSP of Agri produce has come true today. The center has formed a 29-member committee that will look into how to make the minimum support price (MSP) more effective and transparent.
Besides, it will also suggest measures to promote zero-budget natural farming and crop diversification to fulfill the changing needs of the country.
The panel is to be headed by former agriculture secretary Sanjay Agrawal.
The panel will study the practicality of giving more autonomy to the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP) and suggest measures to make it more scientific. Other tasks of the panel include reforms in Agricultural Marketing System to ensure higher value to farmers for their produce.
What a step has been taken by the Govt. Including the farmers in the panel will bring diversity in thought processes and a strong conclusion. What do you think guys?
