“Sudden stunting of paddy plants”—Know the reason?
A mysterious disease has been detected in the paddy fields of Punjab and Haryana which creates fear in the farmers to take up the crop. Let’s know the reason for it,
The plant samples were taken by IARI and PAU to identify and confirm the cause of the stunting of paddy in the field. The results were out now. Scientists have confirmed beyond doubt using multiple methods, that the Southern Rice Black Streaked Dwarf Virus (SRBSDV), initially found in Fiji, is the cause of stunting and white backed plant hopper (WBPH) is a vector.
The respective organizations have followed polymerase chain reactions to find out the causal organism. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a test in which the DNA of the infected plants is amplified to confirm the presence of a virus.
Farmers are advised to use Pexalon, Chess, Token, and Osheen insecticide with various technicals to effectively control WBPH.
Wherever the disease has been diagnosed, the extent of dwarfing is 1-10 percent. Dr. A K Singh, the agriculture commissioner told that the disease is seen to be more in fields where transplanting was done before June 25, when the temperature was high.
Fiji Virus is on trending now in the era of agriculture. But, from where this virus has come to the paddy fields? No one has answered this question so when it will find out then I will let you know. Till then, create awareness among the farmers regarding this new disease so that they won’t be fear and take the necessary steps.
Peat moss ban in the UK signs an increase in coir pith exports from India
Peat moss has been used as a medium in the gardens which has a high demand but due to this, the peat land is affected adversely. So, the UK has been planning to ban peat sales. Let’s read the full story to understand completely,
Indian coir pith exports are likely to benefit further from the proposed move by England to ban peat moss sales - a primary ingredient in seed-starting and potting mixes - from 2024.
Mahadevan Pavithran, Member, Coir Board, told that England is reportedly contemplating a ban on peat sales to restore peat lands.
The ban relates to peat in products designed for gardeners that accounts for 70 percent of the peat sales in the UK, he said.
Coir pith exports had fetched a revenue of ₹2,259 crores, comprising 52 percent of total coir and product exports in FY22 with a shipment of 6,96,175 tonnes against 6,80,898 tonnes in FY21.
Suppose this ban will execute by the UK then India’s coir pith export will touch the sky. What do you think?
